This course examines labor and work in the U.S., from colonial America to the present. We will consider: 1) the relationship between workers, employers, and the state; 2) the strategies that workers? movements have used to build power, along with employers? strategies to minimize that power ; 3) the internal workings of unions, such as democracy, politics, and union structure; and 4) the roles of workers? organizations in reproducing (or changing) inequalities stemming from gender, race, citizenship status, and other identities. We?ll situate these discussions in the changing political, economic, and cultural contexts over time.
Introduction to federal law governing labor unions, the right to organize, and collective bargaining. Topics include historical examination of labor law in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the operation of the National Labor Relations Board, the National Labor Relations Act and basics of public sector labor relations law.
Practicum for LABOR 605, Labor Research I

This course will provide an overview of private and public sector collective bargaining in the United States, both the theory and practice. Readings, assignments, and class discussions will cover the current state of collective bargaining, fundamental negotiation concepts and theories, negotiation styles, social contexts, and how to set up negotiations to maximize bargaining power and influence. The course will also include practical discussions about the process of collective bargaining and the laws that govern it, the role of bargaining and contract action teams, the economics of bargaining, best practices for preparing for negotiations, proposal writing,  bargaining table tactics, and deal design. Special attention will be paid to democratic organizing and contract campaign strategies that shift the balance of power in collective bargaining negotiations.
